Iphone8 Instant battery drain

Fairly new Iphone 8, battery health 100%. Latest version of IOS installed. No issues for over 6 months, then about a week ago, and again today, battery has drained from over 80% to near zero instantly. Phone was on but not being used.

Battery level display shows an instant drop. Recharges OK. Pic is screen shot taken shortly after starting recharge.

Any suggestions as to cause and cure?

iPhone 8, iOS 16

I would recommend keeping an eye on apps shown in the Battery Usage Stats in the Battery Settings menu. Try and keep an eye on what's happening there while the issue is happening. You should hopefully see apps with unusually high battery drain. From there it's at your discretion. If you think the app is misbehaving, report it to the app's developers. Perhaps disable Background App Refresh for that app for now. Or ultimately delete it if needed.

If it's not an app that's misbehaving, it could be an issue with your iOS installation. Perhaps try backing up your data first, then after that plug your iPhone into a PC or Mac with iTunes and perform a factory reset to see if the issue is resolved.

Thanks for the reply. Definitely not an app issue - I don’t use the phone much except for actual calls, use an Ipad mostly. No new apps on the phone, very little battery usage. Can’t think of any app that could cause that much drain that quickly anyways.

I talked with the guy at the store where I got it - he’s never seen this before, said he was going to ask his tech associates and get back to me.
