Export or share a custom ringtone?

A friend has an old ringtone that he made himself ages ago that he'd like to share with me. Unfortunately, the only place the file exists anymore is on his iPhone. How does he get it off his iPhone and into mine?

  • Is it possible to save a ringtone to the Files app and then, say, AirDrop it?
  • He backs up his phone to his laptop — can the file be found somewhere in there?

We're both running the latest version of iOS. Any help anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to send the ringtone via AirDrop or save it in the Files app once it is installed on the iPhone.

TouchCopy writes they can transfer ringtones from the iPhone back to the computer. Have heard the program recommended by another user here before. Search Google for TouchCopy.

It sounds simple: (from their Homepage)

1. Download and install TouchCopy on your computer.

2. Connect your iPhone to your computer via the USB cable.

3. In TouchCopy, open the "Files" section and then click through "iTunes_Control" > "Ringtones".

4. Select the ringtones you want to copy and click "Save to PC" or "Copy to Mac"

Alternatively. Can you play the sound from your friend's iPhone and record it with the Voice Memo app on your iPhone.. After that, you can transfer the sound to a PC or Mac. Converts it to M4R which is the iPhone ringtone format, and transfers it back to your iPhone as a ringtone.
