AirPods 3rd Gen.

I bought an AirPods 3rd Gen from Target to replace my 1st Gen AirPods 14 days ago. Connecting it to my iPad 8th generation has been problematic. The first connection after iPad shutdown always works, but after putting pods back in case, closing lid, and then trying to use them again. It freezes apps, makes them crash, screen unresponsive and audio never comes from the pods.

I have factory restarted my iPad, hard reseted the AirPods, “removed device” in bluetooth, and I even tried using my old 1st generation AirPods which also suddenly has the same problem. The latest thing I did before making the switch was updating my iPad to IOS 16.3. I even tried updating to IOS 16.3.1 to see if the bug was fixed, still have the same problem.

The 3rd and my old 1st Gen AirPods have no trouble connecting to my Macbook Air 2018 and Samsung S9. So I’m not entirely sure if the update has something to do with this. Please help.

Hello Brittany1416,

Sure thing.

  1. I never experience these issues when my AirPods aren’t connected to my iPad.
  2. There are no error messages, the apps & iPad freeze and are unfrozen once AirPods are disconnected.
  3. When sound doesn’t play from the AirPods, they appear to be connected to the iPad.

I’ve gone through your provided linked pages, but I still have the issue.

I tried connecting the AirPods to my relative’s iPad, same 8th generation model, but hasn’t upgraded to iPadOS 16.3. They work perfectly fine there, no issues like the ones I described. I also tried my relative’s AirPods Pro with both iPads, similar result. AirPods, AirPods Pro (probably all AirPods) won’t work on my iPad, but works on my relative’s. Starting to wish I didn’t update.

This is what I see in bluetooth settings, then going to app freezes up and crashes.

Hi Jal4science,

To help us get a better understanding of the issue, we’d like to ask a few questions.

1. Do you ever experience these issues on your iPad when you AirPods aren't connected as well?

2. Do you receive any errors when these issues happen? If so, what does the error say?

3. When the sound won't play from the AirPods, do the AirPods appear to be disconnected from the iPad?

The above details will help us plan how to proceed.

If your AirPods aren't connecting as expected, please check out the information and suggestions in this link, which can help with connection issues: If your AirPods won't connect

If you can't connect to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

1. Make sure that your iPhone or iPod touch has the latest version of iOS or that your iPad has the latest version of iPadOS.
2. Put both AirPods in the charging case and make sure that both AirPods are charging.
3. To make sure that Bluetooth is on, go to Settings > Bluetooth.
4. If your AirPods are connected, make sure that they're selected as your audio device. If your AirPods appear in the list of devices but they don't connect, go to the next step.
5. Close the lid, wait 15 seconds, then open the lid. Press and hold the setup button on the back of the charging case for up to 10 seconds. The status light on the front of the charging case should flash white, which means that your AirPods are ready to connect.
AirPods charging cases

6. Hold the charging case, with your AirPods inside and the lid open, next to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
7. Follow the steps on the screen of your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
8. Test your AirPods. If you still can't connect, reset your AirPods.

If apps aren't working or are closing unexpectedly, please check out this link, which has some information that can help with that issue as well: If an app on your iPhone or iPad stops responding, closes unexpectedly, or won’t open

Thanks!
