Strange repeated clicking noises

Recently it started to produce a strange clicking sound - three clicks in quick succession, then a gap, sometimes of several hours, sometimes just a few minutes. It is hard to tell, but it sounds like it is coming from the speaker. I don't notice any other performance issues. And I can't think of any common event when it occurs - e.g I can be typing or I can be idle.

In trying to diagnose the "problem", I have thought about these things:

  1. I began hearing the sound with my mid 2010 MacBook Pro which still runs fine (except for the software being out of date). So, I recently purchased a new machine. (2021, Apple M1 Pro) and I am now hearing the same noise on this machine!
  2. The sound is a little like the sound made when I try to type and no software is selected and the computer gives a warning clicking sound. But it is a different pitch, and there are always 3 clicks in rapid successions, so not the same.
  3. Googling this issue shows that failing hard disks can make a clicking sound, though I doubt it would be like this (3 quickly then long break). I have an SSD, and Disk First Aid finds no problems, so I doubt that's it.

So I am at a loss. Has anyone any ideas what is causing this and whether it is a problem, please?

Thanks

No other issues... It is a problem when it makes the sound during a zoom meeting or call and also when watching films. I guess my concern is that it may be a virus or mailwar. The fact that it followed me from the old machine to this brand new one is strange.

No associated issues? If it ain't broke do't fix it.

The speed of SSD you can end up hearing circuit activity.

If in doubt take it in take it in over the counter.

To trouble shoot further you can:

—Test issue in another user (or guest user) account Change Users & Groups settings on Mac - Apple Support

This will tell you if it a universal issue or isolated to your user/admin account.

—A SafeBoot How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support will sort many anomalies

Takes a bit longer to get to the login screen, does a quick disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches get cleared and rebuilt, including dynamic loader cache, font cache, etc., third party system modifications and system accelerations are disabled.

Login and test. Reboot  as normal and test.  Caches get rebuilt automatically.

This test will tell you if third party interference; most* extensions etc are not loaded in safe boot mode.

unplug all third party peripherals as a test.

Uninstall all third party apps that are Cleaners/Optimizers/VPN/Anti-Virus
