FaceTime does not know or care how it connects to other devices using FaceTime.
I assume "wired connection" means using Ethernet as opposed to Wi-Fi. Or are you asking about using your iPhone's "hotspot"?
Yes, Ethernet. I have some older gear I was trying to repurpose. I was wondering if it would be possible for a Mac to auto-dial my phone while monitoring a camera. If it were on ups backup I could receive the call via face time and view the surveillance cam live and not worry about Wi-Fi or power outages, apps, fees, etc. I’m retired and tend to hang on to electronic gadgets. I just finished a whole house audio distribution/intercom system using in-ear monitors, choir mics and audio line drivers that a friend gave me when his church did a major overhaul. I tied it into rooms using an audio-video bridge from a radio station with cat5 cable that was already run throughout the house to the TVs The fun never ends!
No problem using Ethernet. That's how all my desktop Macs are connected, and is the preferred network service. Wi-Fi is enabled but only due to the services that require it: AirDrop and unlocking with Apple Watch for example.

Ugh. I'm sure it's possible... but you're going to need a lot of time on your hands. Fortunately it sounds like that's not a problem 🙂
You should probably avail yourself of the experts in the Mac OS X Technologies Community. Their dedication to helping others with questions like yours is amazing.
