Lacie Rugged - Thunderbolt 2 - USB-C - Adaptor Thunderbolt 4

Finally upgraded my mid 2015 Mac Book Pro to a 2023 MacBookPro M2.

In the past I kept my libraries on old rotational Lacie Rugged drives with Thunderbolt 2 connectors. That worked fine for me because my old MBP had Thunderbolt 2 ports.

My new MBP has Thunderbolt 4/USB-C ports.

I can either keep using my old Thunderbolt 2 drives and get a Thunderbolt 4 adaptor or I can get new drives with USB-C connectors.

So I think my two options are:

Use my old drives and get adaptor that goes from Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 4

Get a new Lacie Rugged drive with a USB-C connector.

What should I do?

Get an SSD. Format APFS. Not a fan of LaCie myself, but SSDs are more forgiving. OWC has great drives, but not cheap. Samsung. SanDisk. Crucial all have good drives.

I have a LaCie Rugged with TB2 as well and use it as a backup. It is no fast enough to use a a primary drive. When needed it is connected to my MacMini using a USB 3.0 Type-A Male to Micro Type-B Male Cable, similar to this one, https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/836890-REG/Pearstone_usb3_amib3_USB_3_0_Type_A.html.

You are probably going to want an SSD as a primary drive.

SSD are the better option with appropriate connections to suit your new Mac.

My suggestion is to keep your old drives and use them as BACKUP drives for your work.

Link them with an adapter.
