eGPU with M2 chips in MacBook Pro 2022

Is there a way I can use a eGPU like in a Razer Core X with an ATI GPU in a MacBook Pro with M2 in the near future? I have a MacBook with an Intel chip and want to upgrade. I need more power for upcoming games like Diablo 4. However, it would be hard to think about an upgrade if I will not be able to play new games on high-res with a MacBook Pro with M2.

No. The Apple Silicon Macs do not currently support external GPUs and Apple has not made any mention of planning to support them in the future.

Do note, Blizzard has not disclosed plans for a Mac release of Diablo IV at this time. As such there is no way you could even get it to run on a M2 Mac anyway.

@Grant, that's exactly what the OP wants to do. They are planning on upgrading to an M2 Mac from their current Intel Mac.

I have to do a lot of asumptions right now. I will be able to play Diablo 4 regardless if Blizzard provides a Mac release or a Windows only release and we have to switch to Windows via bootcamp. I assume even a Mac PRo M2 will have issues with the graphics in high res. So my question is, is a MacBook Pro Intel version with a cutting edge eGPU faster than a Mac Pro M2 (which does not provide compatibility with an eGPU).

I wanted some fun and asked ChatGPT: "The MacBook Pro 2019 with an eGPU RX 6800 will likely offer better gaming performance than the MacBook Pro 2022 without an eGPU. The RX 6800 is a powerful graphics card and can handle most modern games at high or ultra settings. However, it's important to note that the performance will depend on the specific game and the settings used. That being said, if you're looking for the best possible gaming experience, a dedicated gaming laptop or desktop with a high-end graphics card would likely provide better performance than either of the MacBook Pro setups mentioned. "

No, I will not buy a gaming laptop or desktop. I prefer Apple products for obvious reasons. :-)

Bootcamp is not available on Apple silicon Macs. The only way to run Windows on an M2 Mac would be through a virtualization option like Parallels. However, that would only let you run the ARM version of Windows, and it's impossible to know wether Diablo IV would even work on the ARM version of Windows at all.

If Blizzard were to release an Apple Silicon native version of Diablo, it would probably run perfectly fine with the M2 gpu, and have no performance hit over an intel Mac with eGPU. In fact it may probably run better if it's a native version for Apple silicon.

As is, and what is known, there probably won't be any eGPU support, and if there ever is a Mac native version of Diablo, it will likely out perform an Intel Mac with an eGPU.

Wow. Thank you. Did not know bootcamp isn't working. I have some obligatory applications I need to run on my bootcamp Windows due to my profession from time to time. I will read about virtualization options like Parallels, thank you! My 2019 MacBook is getting old. Concerning Diablo, I hope Blizzard will recognize the market share Macbooks already have in Europe and provide a OS native version.

For interested folks out there, I got an answer from Blizzard: "Thank you for contacting us with your questions about Diablo 4, my name is Game Master Samenael and I’ve been taking a look into this further for you.

I wanted to make sure I did everything to resolve your issue for you so I double checked our release plans.

But sadly I have to tell you that there are no plans to support Mac for Diablo 4. It is only developed for PC and Consoles. You should be able to play it on a windows emulator, but that is on your own risk and we don't offer any technical support for that."

So maybe it will work on an Emulator like Parallel. But sadly there will be no native version for Mac.
