Family sharing apple id combine email and phone

My child was set up in family sharing on her ipad with email. Now she has a phone I am not able to connect the email and phone number in her apple id so imessages appear on both devices. They are treated as separate ids even though the number is 'trusted' in her apple id settings

iPhone 8 Plus, iOS 16

Hey AngusJFarquhar,

You mentioned that the option on her devices is greyed out. This could be due to Screen Time settings.

On her devices, go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Account Changes. Make sure that this is set to "Allow." Use Screen Time on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Let us know if adjusting Screen Time settings helps! Take care.

Hi AngusJFarquhar,

We will be delighted to help you out with this Apple ID concern. Family Sharing should not be related to the function of using Messages. You would simply need to make sure the same Apple ID that is being used for Messages on her iPad is the same one you sign in with on the iPhone.

The following article shows how to sign in: Sign in with your Apple ID - Apple Support

"Sign in on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Sign in to your [device].
  3. On iPhone, sign in to your Apple ID in the Settings app

  4. Enter your Apple ID and password.
  5. If prompted, enter the six-digit verification code sent to your trusted device or phone number and complete sign in.

"

We hope this clears things up.

Cheers.

Thanks for the reply, but that isn't useful.

I have signed in to her Apple ID on both devices, but she is still sending and receiving messages seperately on her new phone number (on the iPhone) and her email address (iPad that was originally used to set up the Apple ID).

I can see in the Apple ID settings that the phone number is a trusted number in the Apple ID website, but because she is on Family sharing I can't get in to the Apple ID settings on the devices as the option is greyed out.
