Messages acting weird- slow to respond, freezes up

I brought in to a apple shop and found nothing other than it needed a update.

The only other thing I did was remove allot of old posts that had images that where taking up allot of space.

I have hard reset it twice so far- volume up, than down and hold side button until apple logo shows up. I think that's right.

What could it be?

And what did the people at the Genius Bar say?
