iPhone 14 bluetooth audio suddenly get garbled

i have a new iPhone 14 pro max. when connected via bluetooth- and only when making phone calls, after ten minutes the audio suddenly cuts out. It becomes garbled and neither I nor the other person can hear each other clearly. After a moment or two it returns to normal. I disabled and reconnected the airpods. I’ve had the airpods replaced TWICE. and the problem persists. However, the other day, the same thing happened when the phone was connected to the car (no airpods involved) so that eliminates airpods as the source. it never occurs when i’m listening to Spotify or YouTube TV. It can happen at home on the wifi or outside on the cellular network. I’m stumped. Suggestions?

You've done some great troubleshooting on this already. Thanks for taking those steps. Ruling out other audio sources and networks are important and tells us this is likely with your device specifically.

We have a few questions we'd like to ask to narrow this down further:

When you got this iPhone, was it set up as new or did you load on a backup of an older device right away?
Does this happen with FaceTime calls too, or only standard iPhone calls?
Does it happen with multiple contacts?

I loaded it on a backup of my iPhone X

This also happened on a Facebook messenger call .

Verizon had me do a reset and I lost all my saved passwords, and the problem remained. The VZ and Apple support both heard it separately.

We took it off WiFi calling and the problem appeared to persist, yet tonight I got ahold of my wife’s old AirPods and for 30 minutes talking on the phone nothing happened. Then I called again with my air pod pros and after 13 minutes no distortion. Go figure.

Noe I’m really confused.
