We have a variety of streaming services on our Apple TV and some playback shows at different quality with some that have advertisements while others don't. I have some shows with 4-6 options and it seems to randomize which one it loads from the "up next" screen in the Apple TV app.
Is there a way to set a preferred streaming service or even better an order of precedence for playback of TV shows?

The Apple TV app should initially use the content provider from which the watching was started.
But there are a few ways for this preference to be disrupted. E.g. if there are content differences, including episode numbering, between services. Or if a new episode is available on one service before availability on another service.
To change the preferred content provider, go to the show’s main details page, scroll down to How to Watch, then make your selection there.
If that doesn’t result in the intended behavior, then try removing the show from Up Next, and start watching from your preferred content provider again. Then that should be automatically added to Up Next.

It seems like it gets disrupted frequently perhaps due to which streaming service adds the new episode first.
The method you describe is indeed how we ultimately go change it to the provider we want to use. It is just annoying when we have to manually go change it every time we want to watch a show.
