Although I've done this several times before without a hitch, today I'm finding I can't add my amex prepaid gift card to Apply Pay. I called amex to learn that as of 2/22/23 they have a system bug that is preventing an amex gift card to be approved to be added to Apple Pay. It's an amex bug and not Apple and it's been happening for over a month per the rep I spoke to. Regular amex cards work fine, but not gift cards right now.

Unable to add American Express gift card to Apple Pay 4/22/23.
I’ve been trying to load Amex gift card for a week now. Says to contact card issuer. Contacted Amex and no resolution .
Same problem, can’t add it to the wallet, and couldn’t use it to buy an Apple gift card on the Apple website. It think it has to do with verifying the billing address.

3/21/24 okay so it let me add the card to my wallet, but it won’t let me do anything w it. Can’t even exchange some of it to Apple Cash or pay my bill… :/
Yes, I’ve been using it without a problem via Apple Pay. I have only this one card, but if I get another I’ll try that one and report back to see if it still works for me. It’s odd I was able to add but others still are not.
I have 2 cards that won’t add so I called Amex. They were of no help but didn’t say the problem wasn’t a known problem. All I got was a suggestion to try it next week. Can you believe it? It’s been many many weeks and months since it’s worked, maybe a year even. I went to use the card at a restaurant and couldn’t because they’re new system couldn’t swipe cards, only tap to pay- Apple Pay would’ve worked IF my card was in there.
You are a time traveler! You’ve gone back in time to nearly a year ago and resurrected a ten month old issue. I believe AmEx got the verification process updated last June. It’s great to know it’s still working. I hope you have a great weekend!
I had this issue last year, it fixed by itself in like a week I think? Everything smooth after that. And last time I successfully added an Amex gift card was on April 2nd/2024. Now having the issue AGAIN on April 23rd/2024 and I feel so frustrated about it.
I happened to try it again a couple of days ago, and it works now! I successfully added my American Express, prepaid gift card to Apple Pay.
And were you able to use it without it declining?
I was able to add my AMEX gift card to Apple Pay, but it can't use it. Tried to use it on 5/27/23 and it couldn't be verified.
Various systems were just upgraded this past week. It shouldn’t be an issue for people as long as they’ve updated their iPhones to the latest iOS.
