Although I've done this several times before without a hitch, today I'm finding I can't add my amex prepaid gift card to Apply Pay. I called amex to learn that as of 2/22/23 they have a system bug that is preventing an amex gift card to be approved to be added to Apple Pay. It's an amex bug and not Apple and it's been happening for over a month per the rep I spoke to. Regular amex cards work fine, but not gift cards right now.
I just tried and no, it’s not fixed. This is terrible service from both of these companies.
5/8/23 I have a new card, full value on card is confirmed, it will not add. My one card that worked appears to have been an anomaly.

You may want to update your device to the iOS that was released yesterday, May 18, 2023, to see if the issue was fixed.
Updated, tried it a few times, still a no go.
Updated my software to 16.5 (on 5/26) and still cannot add my Amex eGift card to my Apple Wallet (5/26).
Not a good look for either parties as it is advertised as a seamless process.
I added 2 prepaid cards today. Hopefully this trend sticks!

Have you reached out to the support team at American Express. The number is on the back of your Discover IT card. If you have reached out to them, what did they say?
This is ridiculous! I added AMEX egift card to Apple wallet but it keeps being declined even though I have confirmed there is an available balance. Any suggestions?

per Amex phyiscal cards can’t be added to apple wallet, only virtual balances.
