I want to use a song I purchased in Apple Music on an iMovie project I am working on for personal use.

If I am not allowed to use my purchased music on an iMovie project I am making for personal use, how do I obtain permission from the copywrite owner to use a song. Does Apple have a system in place to identify the copywrite owner so I can get permission? If not, they should! It would be very helpful to us.

Apple Music cannot be used in iMovie. All the songs are DRM (Digital Rights Management) protected. Also it is a subscription service, not a song purchase service. One is only renting the songs, so to speak, not purchasing them, and so you cannot download them elsewhere, as in iMovie, and acquire ownership.

You can purchase songs from iTunes and use those in iMovie.
