iPad Air Model MD788LL/A

I discovered a curious issue with this iPad. Firstly, it is not my primary iPad. I use it to run a translator app during the ESL classes I teach online.

The current software version is 12.5.6. I am aware that the age of this iPad prevent further software updates. For my purposes, running MS Translator is sufficient.

I am getting the message: iPad Storage Full. When I view storage details, I see this: System 13.55 GB.

The bar graph illustrating storage devoted to apps reflect this number. In other words, 15.5 GB of 16 GM is being used, with 13.55 GB devoted to "System."

That's hard to believe! Especially since System is not using anywhere near that much space on either of my other two iPads.

What is going on here?

What can I do to correct this issue?

Be aware that for your iPad, iOS 12.5.7 is current - this being a recent security update.

Your 16GB device will always struggle - as you will aways have issues with available storage. Much of this space will be required for caching data, this representing a significant proportion of System data (illustrated).

It is impossible to increase the amount of RAM or internal storage in your iPad - as this is fixed during manufacture; what you have is fixed for the life of your device. You can, however, subscribe to a higher tier of iCloud storage - but this is not a substitute for internal storage.

Upgrade to iCloud+ - Apple Support

If your internal storage is full, your only option is to better manage the storage that you have - and delete unused Apps or unneeded data.

“Offloading” Apps can be a helpful method of creating temporary space for a software update.
