Using iPhone SE with headset

I have searched extensively for an explanation and/or workaround why my iPhone SE, running iOS 15.7.3 sends music to both the wired headphones and the speaker. The idea is to avoid disturbing those around you who don't wish to listen to music leaking from the phone even when I am wearing the headset. I understand simply plugging in the headset to the phone's jack sets the phone to headset mode, and when I slide up from settings I can see airplay has indeed checked the headset, but the sound still leaks out and others can hear it. I often listen to music while I work (I work from home) and my wife always comments that she can hear whatever I am playing. I want zero leakage to speaker. Is that even possible? Is this a bug in the phone or in iOS? Obviously, my OS is up to date. Anyone have a definitive answer?

The headphones are very high quality Sennheiser with full over-the-ear cups that fully enclose ears. However, I wear glasses and there is just enough space around temple pieces to permit leakage. When I remove headphones and hold the phone right up against my ear I cannot hear the music. My wife has extremely acute hearing and she says she can hear the music when I am wearing the headphones. It now seems obvious the sound is leaking around the incomplete seal over the glasses. And since the temples are metal, they probably radiate some sound as well. So, mystery solved. I'll remember to remove my glasses when flying to avoid disturbing seatmates.

Hey there perlboy_emeritus,

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities.

Just to clarify, when listening to music and if you take off your headset, are you able to hear the music playing from your iPhone speaker and headset, or does the sound only come from your connected headset?

If the sound is only coming from your headphones and can be heard while over your ears, you could try lowering the headset volume to reduce any sound leaking from the headset speakers, or check out the information in the following resource on how to use the headphone audio level features on your iPhone: Use headphone audio level features on iPhone - Apple Support

Reduce loud headphone sounds in Settings
1. Go to Settings , then tap Sounds & Haptics (iPhone 7 and later) or Sounds (earlier models).
2. Tap Headphone Safety.
3. Turn on Reduce Loud Sounds, then drag the slider.

iPhone analyzes your headphone audio and reduces any sound above the level you set.

If you're hearing the music play from both the iPhone and headset, is the music playing in sync, or does the music start and stop playing unexpectedly on your iPhone?

Keep us updated on what you find, and we'll continue from there.

Take care!
