Check the status of a refund for apps or content that you bought from Apple - Apple Support

says: "If your refund is approved, the funds are applied to the same payment method that you used to buy the item."


I presume that means it will indeed go back to the payment method used, even if it is no longer present on the account. If Apple should not be able to refund to the payment method I believe they will issue a credit note into your ID.
