Using Markup in Preview app, after saving, markup color(s) are not saved.

Having an issue when using the Markup feature in the Preview app.

Have an image (usually a jpg document), use the Markup feature with the various Tools (Sketch, Draw, Shapes, Text, Style, Border Color, Fill Color, Text Style/Color) to insert colored boarder shape box and/or text box (background color & text color).

Finish with Markup on jpg document, then save the document with changes.

All of the border boxes and text boxes are in the document without the color changes - everything is a grey color (borders, boxes, text). See attachment.

Is this the standard operational feature for saving jpg docs after using the Markup feature?

Any ideas?

Now, if I utilize a pdf doc, open in Preview, and use Markup, then save the document as a jpg or pdf there are no issues with the additions/changes I have made.

The color profile of an image can be changed in the Preview app.

In the Preview app toolbar select >Tools >Assign Profile..., then select color profile.

Though, have found if an jpeg image is (automatically) assigned the "Generic Gray Gamma / Profile" color there are not additional color selections and will need to use ColorSync Utility app to change the color profile.

Hi pjmaruk,

Regarding the feature the guide page below does mention you're able to choose border colors, fill colors and text style. You can find the link for the guide page here: Use Markup to write or draw on a photo in Photos on Mac

"Use Markup to write or draw on a photo, add shapes, crop, rotate, and more.

Note: You can’t use the Markup tools to change a video. See Change and enhance a video.

  1. In the Photos app  on your Mac, double-click a photo, then click Edit in the toolbar.
  2. Click the Extensions button , then choose Markup.
  3. Use the tools that appear in the toolbar to mark up the photo.

For descriptions of each tool, see the table below.

To adjust a markup, move the pointer near the edges, then drag the blue handles.

4.Click Save Changes.

To change a marked-up photo later, select it, then click the Extensions button and choose Markup again."

OK, correction on one item from my previous reply-

In Preview app, open jpeg image, click on the Inspector icon, the ColorSync Profile needs to be changed using the ColorSync Utility app, in the toolbar change profile drop down menu > "Match to Profile" then next drop down menu (color selection), choose > "Display" then select any of the color schemes (U32J59x), then save image.

I do wish there was a simpler way to change the ColorSync profile from the Preview app with a menu to select your color output options.

Thank you for the information.

I have reviewed the info on the Markup tools but that info is more specific to photos in the Photo app.

I am utilizing the Preview app > Markup tools.

I have two jpeg images, one in grayscale color, the other image is in "RGB" color. This info comes from the information icon for each open image. There is difference in the designation > "Color Model" and the "ColorSync profile" - so each of the jpeg images are auto selecting the color mode & ColorSync profile. (See attachments)

Need to figure out how to have jpeg images not have the "Gray" & Generic Gray Gamma 2.2 profile designation in the color model & ColorSync profile. Any help?
