I changed my Apple ID due to abandoning that email address and have just recently tried to log into IPAD. It is forcing me to attempt login with old Apple ID. I tried changing my AppleID back to the old ID and it doesn't like the email address I am entering, maybe it doesn't like the format.
I am stuck, I don't want to lose the apps I p have paid for.

Did you change your Apple ID email (the right thing to do and what should not create any problems), or did you create an entirely new account (which will involve data loss, and in worst case scenarios, equipemtn loss)?
Here's the correct way to change the email address you use for your Apple ID:
1. Go to https://appleid.apple.com and sign in.
2. In the Sign-In and Security section, choose Apple ID.
3. Enter the email address that you want to use as your Apple ID.
4. Choose Change Apple ID.
5. If you changed your Apple ID to a third-party email address, check your email for a verification code, then enter the code. Learn what to do if you didn't get the email. --> If you didn't receive your verification or reset email - Apple Support
6. If you use services like iCloud or Messages to share with friends and colleagues, sign in to those services with your updated Apple ID. --> What to do after you change your Apple ID or password - Apple Support

The issue is the Apple website will not let me change my Apple ID/email to the one I had used prior.
I get message "Apple ID Error: Enter a valid email address to use as your Apple ID."
And since my IPAD is forcing me to login with the older id, I cannot update anything on the IPAD.
Is there not a way to change my IPAD setting so that I can use my current Apple ID?
