In Numbers, there used to be an option for creating custom error bars in scatter plots. Now there is no such option (in Numbers 12.1) and there is a menu for "Positive and negative" error bars which has three choices: Item 1, Item 2 and Item 3. What do these mean and can one still create custom error bars?

That's strange. Have you tried deleting Numbers (in Launchpad hold down the option key and click the x by Numbers) and reinstalling it again from the Mac App Store?

Got it to do it again but still no idea what might be causing it. The popups in my table are not "item 1 item 2 item 3" so it is not repeating one of them. They are probably not related to the problem.
Clicking off of the chart and going back to it cleared it up and made it work correctly. Must be a bug. I have entered a bug report with a link to this thread.
I got it to happen here but only after messing around a bunch and then only when I had clicked on an error bar. I started over and tried again and couldn't repeat it, not yet anyway. I don't know what did it and it is all working correctly now.
Even if I click off the chart, the problem doesn't disappear. For a split second, before the Item 1, Item 2 Item 3 menu appears and remains, I can see the beginning of the menu, starting with Fixed value, as it should be. Then it automatically switches to the Item menu. I can still try to download Numbers again, which I haven't tried yet.
No. I can not choose anything in Positive or Negative. It flashes the box, but then it disappears and the colors on my data table change. 🤔
If on the other hand I start all over on a new sheet, it seems to work if I do things in a certain order without making any mistakes.
After clicking the series you're not seeing this in the pane at the right?

Thank you for the answer. No, this is what I saw before. Now, instead of the menu containing Custom values, there is only Item 1, Item 2, Item 3.
If you click on an error bar in the chart, it brings up settings for the error bar. It has the same menu there. Can you adjust the bars there?
