How do I make it not auto connect to my phone? I want to choose what plays through my AirPods Pro.

I want to choose what and when my Air Pods Pro connects to any device. How can I achieve that?

Hi DreamaKay,

If you're referring to your AirPods switching to another device, you might want to turn off Automatic Switching using these steps: Switch your AirPods to another device

"On your iPhone or iPad

  1. With your AirPods in your ears and connected to your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Bluetooth. Alternatively, you can go to Settings > [your AirPods].
  2. Tap the More Info button  next to your AirPods in the list of devices.
  3. Tap Connect to This iPhone [or iPad].
  4. Tap When Last Connected to This iPhone [or iPad].
  5. To turn on this feature again, tap Automatically."

You can keep your AirPods Pro from connecting to your iPhone by keeping them in your charging case. It's standard Bluetooth behavior for an accessory to reconnect with a paired device when it's started up. You can also use Control Center to disconnect from all Bluetooth devices for the rest of the day:

Temporarily disconnect from Bluetooth devices
In Control Center, tap the Bluetooth Switch button; to allow connections, tap the button again.
Because Bluetooth isn’t turned off when you disconnect from devices, location accuracy and other services are still enabled. To turn off Bluetooth, go to Settings  > Bluetooth, then turn off Bluetooth. To turn on Bluetooth again in Control Center, tap the Bluetooth Switch button.

Use and customize Control Center on iPhone

These options should help you manage when and where your AirPod connect.

We appreciate you clarifying this for us, DreamaKay,

You may consider resetting your AirPods if they start playing music as soon as you remove them from their case. This article will guide you through the process of resetting your AirPods: How to reset your AirPods and AirPods Pro - Apple Support

  1. "Put your AirPods in their charging case, and close the lid.
  2. Wait 30 seconds.
  3. Open the lid of your charging case, and put your AirPods in your ears.
  4. Go to Settings > Bluetooth. Or go to Settings > [your AirPods].
    • If your AirPods appear there as connected, tap the More Info button  next to your AirPods, tap Forget This Device, then tap again to confirm.
    • If your AirPods don't appear there, continue to the next step.

5. Put your AirPods in their charging case, and keep the lid open.

6. Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case for about 15 seconds, until the status light on the front of the case flashes amber, then white.*

AirPods charging cases

7. Reconnect your AirPods: With your AirPods in their charging case and the lid open, place your AirPods close to your iPhone or iPad. Follow the steps on your device's screen.

AirPods can be associated with one Apple ID. If you want to use AirPods (3rd generation) or AirPods Pro (1st or 2nd generation) that someone else has used, they first need to remove the AirPods from their Apple ID."

If you still experience the same behavior after resetting your AirPods, you may consider contacting Apple to investigate this further with you. You can reach them here: Contact Apple Support

Take care!
