Guess Mac just doesn't recognize the drive at all.
It would appear so. Try a different cable, if you haven't already.
If you eventually give up on the drive and conclude it is really dead, its warranty has run out, you have absolutely nothing to lose and you are about to throw it in the trash, try repeatedly slamming it against something moderately hard. Try it with the drive powered up if you want. Don't ask me why, but I did exactly that with one that I had written off. It worked. Years later, that drive still works. It remains in daily service.
It happens to be a Western Digital drive, same 2.5 size but installed in a cheap USB enclosure. Their P10 Black probably uses a very similar drive. No drive manufacturer is better than any other. The are all the same cheap disposable junk.
