How to add option to scan QR code with Applepay?

My Apple Card is the default payment method in my wallet. I can pay with wifi pay, but there is no option to scan a QR code to make a payment. Using my camera to scan the vendor’s QR code doesn’t bring me to a payment method. I don’t see anything in settings to change. What can I do to add this option?

Thank you. There are several payment apps like Apple wallet that have built in QR code readers. WeChat pay and nearly every banking app in Cambodia, for example. They do not bring you to a website. You choose the scan code option within the app and it directly deducts from or charges to your chosen/linked account. My ABA app even allows me to pay offline when the signal is too weak to connect.

When I asked to use Apple Pay last night at a restaurant in BKK and the waiter brought me a QR code, I thought Apple had caught up, but couldn’t find the option within my wallet. Perhaps the waiter misunderstood me and assumed I wanted to pay with a Thai banking app.

I did a quick google search at the time and read that I could scroll down in my wallet to the qr reader, but I couldn’t find it anywhere. I read several articles from 2020 that this feature was coming soon to Apple Wallet and one that suggested it was already available. But I guess it hasn’t happened yet, though I wonder if it’s because my Apple ID is based in the US.

I’ll try clarify here what I’m supposed to do when presented with a QR code rather than the NFC reader.

So this is not accurate? https://qr.io/blog/apple-pay-qr-code-making-payments-on-ios/.

I’ve been paying with Apple Pay using NFC all over Southeast Asia. Today I asked to pay with Apple Pay at a restaurant in BKK, showing the waiter my Apple Card on my screen. Without confusion or hesitation he gave a quick nod and bought me the QR code. This led me to believe this is common practice here. Could it be that my appleID is US based?

I can understand the confusion.

ApplePay + iPhone natively uses NFC to communicate a credit card payment to a POS terminal. These terminals may be wireless and carried by the server to your table.

Another - but fundamentally different - payment method uses a QR code to direct your BROWSER to a web site … on which you may THEN use the “ApplePay” button to complete the payment transaction.

(In the U.S. P.F. Chang’s and Chili’s are the only establishments I’ve personally encountered using this 2nd method - printing the QR code on your server-presented check; although I’m sure there are others)
