Cannot send mail, says icloud user not signed in

Try sending gmail to iCloud when this happens… funny

My iCloud email is receiving incoming mail just fine. But when I compose and send an email it does not get delivered to the recipient.
So, I am forced to send from Gmail.
Anyone else have this issue?
They told me their weak *** storage is the problem. Pay them for storage or no email. Sounds like extortion
