On occasion when unlocking my phone it opens the bottom left app, no matter what app is in this position. Happens when there are no notifications. I have already reset my settings in an attempt to fix it. All the posts I’ve seen regarding this issue was from 2+ years ago. Anyone have this issue recently?

First thing is move that app elsewhere on the home screen.
If the new app in the same position opens this time it is probably screen hardware problem.
If the same app opens in the new position is is probably software.
If it is hardware you need to contact Apple Support for a repair.
Before arranging for a repair or visit to a genius bar, first try a Forced restart
