Photos shared via the Photos app (iOS) are destroyed before sharing

If you share a photo directly via an app they come out much higher quality than when they are shared via the Photos app. Can Apple PLEASE finally add a setting to increase quality when sharing via the Photos app? Photos look like they were taken by a potato when shared via the photos app!

Hey there Radium3D,

There are multiple options for sharing photos from your iPhone and with iCloud Photos, you can share multiple full-quality photos with an iCloud link. Take a look at this article for info on sharing photos from your iPhone:

Share photos and videos on iPhone

With that being said, where are you sharing the photos to? Are you share via Mail, Messages, or some other app? That could have an impact on the size of the attachment you can send.

Get back to us with the answer and we’ll go from there.

Take care.

Hello Radium3D,

As mentioned in the above article:

"The size limit of attachments is determined by your service provider. For devices or services that don’t support Live Photos, a Live Photo is shared as a still photo."

This could be reduced by the apps receiving from Photos. We recommend reaching out to the app developer for guidance on this issue as described here: How to contact an app developer - Apple Support

We hope this helps.

Cheers!

If you share a photo from the Photos app to any other app like Facebook or Signal, it decreases the resolution and blurs it to death with quality reductions. I have tested this by sharing directly from the app first, it was great quality, then I shared with the Photos app and the Photos app appears to have destroyed the image before it sent it to the app. I just want to have a option to share from the Photos app without it doing any modifications to the photo pixel resolution and quality reduction (artifacts). The quality should be sent to the apps as full resolution with little to no jpeg quality reductions ideally. Less potato !

Thanks, I have submitted a bug report to the Signal developers. We shall see who is to blame :)

The fact that this happens to multiple apps is a bit concerning and leads me to believe it is actually Apple's end that has the issue. How would multiple apps, built by entirely different teams end up with the same issue with photo quality shared from the Photos app?

So it looks like it is on the Apple side unfortunately. “Unfortunately, this is working as expected. Apple limits the amount of memory that we can use in the share extension, which means that we have to compress images more when they go through that path...and why Apple's apps can sidestep this problem.

I'm going to close this issue because I don't think there's anything we can do.”

There is something Apple can do. Increase the memory limit
