New Items in Photo

There has been a previous string on this topic but it never came to a resolution.

I have an iPhone 13 mini running 16.11. I have a MacBook Pro running Ventura 3.2.1.

When I use a USB to connect my phone to my Mac and go to Photo, it asks whether I want to "Import All New Items" or "Import Selected." I highlight the new photos and import them. I do not check the "Delete items after import" box.

The imported photos should appear on my Mac and should remain on my phone. However, the next time that I connect my phone, these photos should not appear in the selection of "new" items to import.

In fact, every time that I connect my phone, the selection of supposedly "new" photos grows. There are now 325 of them. The fact that the list grows shows that it's got nothing to do with the settings that I'm using because these are not changing.

This is clearly a design defect and needs fixing. There's no point in asking me to do all sorts of tests; it's simple, it doesn't work properly.

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 13.2

It will depend on your settings on the iPhone, if the Duplicate detection can work on the Mac. There are three possible reasons, that already imported photos will appear as "new" photos over and over again.

  1. If iCloud Photos has been enabled on your iPhone, the storage optimisation will remove photos from your iPhone and download them again, when you need them. The new download is saving new files, that might appear as duplicates.
  2. If your iPhone is shooting the photos as HEIC images (Settings > Camera > Formats > High Efficiency), but you are downloading the as JPEGs, the format conversion will create new files for every download, and you will download the same photos over and over again. (Settings > Photos > Transfer to Mac or PC)
  3. If you are using iCloud Photos or My Photo Stream, the photos you download from the iPhone to your Mac, will sync back to your iPhone as new photos and may also appear as new photos for downloading, the next tie you connect your iPhone.

To avoid duplicates on import, avoid to mix the manual downloading with any iCloud features. and avoid the automatic format conversion.

Hello ConfusedatHome,

Let's use the steps below to get your iPhone updated to the latest version of iOS:

1. Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.
2. Plug your device into power and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi.
3. Go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.
4. If you see more than one software update option available, choose the one that you want to install.
5. Tap Install Now. If you see Download and Install instead, tap it to download the update, enter your passcode, then tap Install Now. If you don't know your passcode, learn what to do.

You can also find those steps in this resource: Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support That should help to further isolate a potential software conflict.

Should that still persist, you'll want to reach out to Apple Support: Contact - Official Apple Support They'll be in the best position to look into this behavior further.

Take care.
