How do I get my streamlined desktop with select folders on the desktop? It's a mess with folders, documents stacked and piled all over the screen!!!!!

I don’t know how it was organized before, so I can’t really tell you how to get it back to that state. If you don’t want to use stacks, then turn that off. just control click on the desktop and deselect use stacks. In the view options, set it to sort the desktop however, you want to organize it

To add to Barney-15E's suggestion when you right click on the desktop you'll get this contextual menu:
Then you can select by Stacks or for however you'd like. The Clean up By menu will get you this:
You'll have to experiment to get what you want.
Thank you. I was just trying to do this and am freaking out because the desk top as I had my current folders and work is just GONE. This computer looks like my old one from more than 2 years ago with old folders and files and nothing current.
