iPhone 4 speakers not working

Since getting my new iPhone 4 the speakers won't work. I get sound through headphones, but not through speakers. Occasionally I will get sound (clicking when unlocking) but then it goes again. Does anyone know what's wrong and/or how to fix it?

Hi All,

I had this Sound / Speaker issue too on my iPhone 4S, with only Ringtone & Headphones working and no other sound coming despite several software hacks and solutions read on forums here. I managed to solve it today after reading online for a perfect solution.

This seems to be a fairly frequent problem amongst users who are using 3rd party (Cheap Chinese) dock connectors or chargers. There is some residue on the charging connector and hence it seems to be stuck in Dock/Headphone mode. I personally had this issue that only Ringtone and Headphone were working. I cleared some stuck particles from the dock connector in iPhone below and voila ! Sound works perfectly. Try it using a cotton bud / swab with removed cotton or I did it with inverted metal paper clip carefully avoiding to scrap and destroy the PCB board. (Other common solution was to remove water particles from headphone hole but I didnt have any)

All the best,

Cheers !

My iPhone 4S was still under warranty when the speakerphone stopped working, along with the sound for the iPod music function, and video audio. Gaming was a 100% silent affair, no sound effects. No ring or alarm either, which was the big problem. I'm glad the warranty was still in effect because when I took the speaker issue to the Apple store in Southpoint (Durham) the technical specialist decided to offer me a replacement, no charge. She did look at it to see if just the speaker needed replaced then she assessed it as a complicated software issue. So I hope that helps those looking at this thread.

Right after reading your review I ran to get some cotton swabs. Came back to my phone and unplugged the dock connector. The screen went dark pressed the home button to open it. When I swiped, my phone just went "click" like it never was out of sorts. How funny that as I was preparing for major surgery the problem just disappeared! Thanks anyway and I'm gonna clean my phone at 2:26 in the morning to make sure it stays "ok".

Try to reboot the iPhone by holding the power button and the home button together for at least 5 to 10 seconds, then release. The phone can sometimes suffer from complicated software glitches. I know this because my uncle works in apple support and I am an somewhat avid about electronics. Rebooting the phone is like cleaning up your room, after you do so you can find things that were lost when it was cluttered. I hope this helps!
