iPhone 4 speakers not working

They are saying that the speakers are not working, it has nothing to do with the headphone jacks. Seeing how they can hear with the headphones inserted. That does not help our situation. Thanks.

You are actually trying to correct someone that made a statement 2 years ago?

Actually in the situation he describes it would affect the speakers while still allowing the headphones to work.

Thank you iamlegend41! I've spent most of the afternoon since my speaker stopped working trying out all of the suggestions previous to yours and cleaning my dock connection on my phone has solved the problem! Thanks

I had this same problem everyone else has had. One minute evertything was great with my 4S, the next none of my sounds would work from the speaker...except for the ringtone. Headphones worked fine. After resetting all my settings to factory (do not do this until all else fails), it still didnt work. I finally took a Q-tip, stripped back 95% of the cotton, and inserted it into the headphone jack. I then gently rotated it in the bore. This totally fixed it! Everything works- Youtube vid sounds, game sounds, everything! Now back to restoring all my preferences (ringtones, alert tones etc.) Hope this helps guys, good luck!

Have quite an odd case here, I have looked through this entire thread and it looks like it is quite a unique situation.

My speakers do not work (that is not the unusual part). When I open my music app on my Iphone 4s, it does not have an option to change the volume. It is as if my phone thinks it is plugged into a dock, where the volume is controlled by a seperate entity.

I plug my phone into my car via AUX cable usually, until this situation happened. (I do not get sound from headphones either). I was forced to plug in my phone via usb into my stereo, when I half take out the USB connector from the bottom of my phone, music will play out of the speakers perfectly. It will also work for some time after unplugging, then it dies, and I cannot use my speakers again until I re-plug my phone back into a dock/my car (USB charger does not work).

Has anyone ever had a problem like this before? Or any ideas how to fix. I tried cleaning the headphone port as suggested multiple times but with no success... As I previously mentioned, it is as if my phone thinks there is something half stuck in the usb connector which only resembles a dock at odd points during the day... It just doesn't make sense!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I had the same problem. I don't know if you came across my posts or not. Anyhow, as you said, the phone thinks there is something stuck in the USB connector, so all what you need to do is clean the USB connector with something, and blow some air in it to clean the dust. I did it and the speakers worked fine after that.

I too thought was iOS 6 upgrade prob as had downloaded it a week prior. Then Speakerphone stopped working on phone calls. Couldn't hear music thru speakers and phone wouldn't ring, although would vibrate. I had been getting messages lately that my phone couldn't back up to iCloud as used up my storage. I downloaded all my pics and videos I took on phone, to my computer and cleaned almost all off my phone. Voila, sound thru speaker working again. I know there are a variety of situations on this thread, but this one worked for me.

I spilt a pint of boiling water on my wife's iPhone 4, dried it off using paper towels, later discovered the speaker believed that it should be using the headphones so I simply put the iPhone on a 1 inch high lid, put the hair dryer on medium about 2 inches away facing the headphone socket and left it for 5 minutes, I then turned the iPhone around so that the dock connector faced the hairdryer and left it 5 minutes.

10 minutes later, all working.

Here's what has worked for me in the past:

1) Turn the Phone off, then back on

if not that, then 2) Hard reset the phone (Hold power and home for 5 seconds)

if not that, then 3) turn the phone off, then use a cotton swab with some alcohol to clean out the dock connector or the headphone jack

if not that, then 4) Play a song. With no sound coming out, reconnect it to a speaker dock, then disconnect it again. Sometimes the last time it disconnected didn't register.

if not that, then 5) Rapidly plug and unplug the headphones about 5 times - this may unstick the headphone jack

if not that, then 6) If you get sound through headphones, plug in headphones. Start a song. Unplug the headphones

Do not use alcohol unless it is denatured alcohol. And I would avoid even that. There is a moisture sensor at the dock connector and in the headphone jack and the alcohol will trigger it voiding the warranty.

Hi all, I know this is an old post, but the same thing happened to me recently.

I have a 15 month old iPhone 4 and had the odd trouble with the home button taking a second click to go to homescreen, then about 8 days ago I had the " sound through the buds but not the speaker issue "

Tried all remedies on here other than hairdryer ( don't know anyone who has one )

I live on an island in the Thai gulf so Apple store is not an option, however I learnt a trick they use in the tropics that gets moisture from humidity, out of anything.

I wrapped my phone in a paper napkin, then put it in a container with about a kilo of uncooked rice and left it for about 20 hours. This works like rice in a salt shaker to stop it getting moist.

Now everything is working like new, clicks, speakers, ringtones, homebutton, the works.

Take care to cover the dock connector, power button, volume controls and speaker jack with the paper as you dont want to add to the problem by adding rice dust.

If you're not in Asia you can probably buy some sort of absorber pack but rice worked fine for me, first used this method to dry out the fogged camers lense of a 3g I dropped in the dunny and it fixed it perfectly until it got stolen.

This worked for me, blowing into the phone bottom like birthday candles. I dock my phone on an iHome alarm clock, also to the car AUX port to play the iPod in both cases, or in the car, also satellite radio. The bottom speaker had been acting up with a poor quality grainey sound, gradually worsening over a few days until today, nothing. The ear speaker works, I can hear phone calls thank God, but the speaker phone stopped working yesterday while I was trying to make a call. Kept trying a few more times, and nothing. Today, I had no sound with speaker phone either, no iPod speaker, and no speaker function on games.

Had iCracked iPhone repair call me and he suggested

1. Updating the iPhone software (it was)

2. A hard reset using both top off button and Home button at same time (didn't work)

3. Researching online for others with the same problem (blowing the bottom ports clean worked)

I completely lost all speaker sound, read the posts on this site, blew very hard into the headphone jack on top and USB and speaker ports below and magically the speaker works!

Then it stopped working again. I think they owe me a replacement.
