An update is the same primary release of macOS (e.g. Catalina) but a minor version change. An upgrade is changing from an older primary release of macOS (e.g. Mojave) to a newer primary release (e.g. Catalina).

If you were using the retired Office 2008/2011 suites on macOS Mojave or older and then upgraded to macOS Catalina, then those MS Office applications are unusable on Catalina as they are not 64-bit applications. Your Office documents are unaffected by this factor.

As Microsoft has dropped support for macOS Catalina, they prevent new installations of Microsoft 365 (subscription) or the single-purchase Office 2019/2021 for Mac suites, and existing installations of these no longer receive updates, but continue to function.

If you are in the scenario where you have no functional MS Office on Catalina, then you will need to consider an MS Office clone solution, or if your iMac is a 2014 model, you could upgrade to Big Sur, and if a 2015 or later model, to macOS Monterey. Either of those newer operating systems would allow new installations of MS Office.

Some alternatives to consider:
