Why does iCloud Drive still take up so much room?!

I have gone through my MacBook Air with a fine toothed comb deleting files and removing clutter trying desperately to clear out enough room for running Final Cut Pro. I looked at iCloud Drive taking up 175gb out of my 256gb capacity. It’s all iCloud stuff that shouldn’t be on my MacBook, why is it still taking up so much room? Apple: make iCloud Drive settings for users to choose specific apps to use the drive feature. Do better.

iCloud is a synchronization service, not offline storage. Anything in iCloud is also on your device by design. If you optimize your files some may then be offloaded to iCloud only but you have no control over that process.
