My old work phone was at end of contract with my old company. They don't want the phone back and I want to possibly unlock if possible, but i guess their might be an unlock code I wasn't advised. Not sure on how t

Only the provider can unlock it. Apple has no way of unlocking it. They do not lock them.

Show your provider the support document I linked to above. It specifies exactly what you need to do, and how only they can unlock it.
