Verizon currently has possession of my trade in phone and they have let me know that I didn’t turn “find my phone” off (I was certain I did). Is there anyway I can turn it off without having the phone in my possession?

Log into your icloud account at https://icloud.com/find and remove the device from the list of devices. That will remove the activation lock.
