Audio input to MacBook Air

I need audio input into my macbook air (13.3“, 2020, Ventura 13.2.1) for recording. However trying with a mini jack to usb-c adaptor has no result (no sound coming in, input in system options for sound indicates „headphones“). Do these adaptors only work in the other direction i.e. output into headphone? Is there any solution at all for a macbook air (with lacking mini jack input)?

Hi saerdnak,

You could always look into using an audio interface designed for recording. You'll find some examples here on the Apple website: Music Creation - Creativity - All Accessories - Apple

The specifics of using an audio interface would vary depending on the interface and the app you're using. If you're using Logic Pro X, this has some good information as a start: Using audio devices with Logic Pro overview - Apple Support

Take care.

Hey there saerdnak,

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities.

To get started, we do want to make you aware that depending on the Mac model, there would only be one or two sound ports on your device. Additionally certain sound ports may only support certain output and input devices.

For more details on connecting audio devices, and changing the sound input on your Mac, check out this link here: Change the sound input settings on Mac - Apple Support

Depending on your Mac model, there may be one or two sound ports. If your Mac has separate ports for sound input and output, the input port may use either a microphone icon Audio input port icon or a sound input icon Audio input port icon. If your Mac has only one sound port, it may have a headphones icon Audio output port icon or no icon at all. This sound port supports stereo output and mono input (such as a headset with a built-in microphone).

You can use your computer’s internal microphone, your display’s microphone (if it has one), your iPhone microphone, or an external microphone plugged into your computer’s sound port.

Let us know if that's able to help.

Have a great day!

Dear Chris

Thanks a lot for your detailled information.

Together with another information by an Apple specialist, it seems clear now that it is not possible to use a macbook air 2020 for recording music = stereo sound because

  • the sound port is only for mono input
  • the usb-c port does not except sound, so an adaptor for jack to usb-c is useless.

So I have to use a different Mac model than my own.

Best regards
