Text Message Videos Received with No Sound

I see the gray icon of the microphone with a line through it in the upper right, and when I touch it, I hear the video sound, but my question is, is there a way to make it automatically play the sound every time I touch any videos without having to touch that microphone icon every time to turn it on?

Strgzr,

Are you experiencing this issue via Cellular Data, Wi-Fi, or both? Also, Go to Settings > General > About. Once you're there, please let us know which version of iOS you're running.

If you're running a dated version of iOS, please use the link below to update your device.

Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

1) Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.
2) Plug your device into power and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi.
3) Go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.
4) If you see more than one software update option available, choose the one that you want to install.
The Settings app on iPhone showing options to update to iOS 15.7 or iOS 16.
5) Tap Install Now. If you see Download and Install instead, tap it to download the update, enter your passcode, then tap Install Now. If you don't know your passcode, learn what to do.

While a simple update can seem trivial, it can actually resolve many minor issues with the device.

Please let us know the outcome after giving the above steps a try.

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities.

Cheers!

Hello Strgzr,

Thank you for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

These steps may be able to help:

"Follow these steps

  1. If your device has a Ring/Silent switch, move the switch forward—toward the device's display—so that orange isn't showing. If you're using an iPad, you can also swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center and make sure that Silent Mode is off. iPhone ring/silent switch
  2. Open Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb and make sure that Do Not Disturb is off."

More details can be found here: If you hear no sound or distorted sound from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch speaker

If the issue persists, can you prod a few more details? Which app are you using? Where are the videos from? Also, which device and iOS version are you currently using?

Cheers!

Thanks for replying, Strgzr, and that additional info, it really helps! To help narrow this down, is this happening in the Apple Messages app or a different app?

Is this happening with any contact that sends a video? Or just certain contacts, like those that don't use an iPhone?

In the screenshot in your original question, is the video shown a link to a video on a different app, like YouTube?

Have a great day and thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

JDO tks for specific questions to help figure this out more: **Replies after your questions:

**On iPhone13 in iphone/Apple Messages app.

Is this happening with any contact that sends a video? Or just certain contacts, like those that don't use an iPhone?

**Yes any contact, two have iPhones (13 Pro & XR), other Android. Whether I send to them or they send to me. Mainly the ones I send it to say "I can't hear it" and I then tell them about greyed out icon; I'd prefer to tell them (and me to find out)if there's some setting someplace to have it auto play if touch top part (not arrow opening YTube) without having to touch greyed out icon to hear the audio.

In the screenshot in your original question, is the video shown a link to a video on a different app, like YouTube?

**It's a link to YouTube video, but happens whether I send to person or they send to me; both going/coming are links to YouTube videos. ...I know top part of video link/pic is where I can play it inside messages app, that's where greyed out icon is, and if I click lower right facing arrow I know it opens my YouTube app and sound plays fine, as it does everywhere else. (see pic)

So I was wanting to know if a way to keep only playing inside messages and touching top middle of link and YT video play without hitting that greyed out icon to hear it every time.

****...I just tried one thing, and maybe this is ONLY fix(?)- (possible easier to tell senior citizens the following than trying to see greyed out icon to touch to turn on, haha): I hit up on sound button on side of iPhone(NOTE: my sound was already half way up when I tested on other audio files just before this test)and it started playing Ytube sound that could be heard even tho' mic icon was still greyed out.

If you have any other ideas - like not even having that greyoud out/line thru mic turned off (a way to have it on all the time)let me know. Tks for input from all of you!

It happens with any YouTube video and has been for as long as I can remember not specific, I do not think as you say, to the developer.

And I’m surprise no one else has said anything about whether they’ve tested this out themselves and whether it has happened on their iPhones or not. I’ll wait for other peoples replies, otherwise it looks like nothing can be done any further, and I will just suggest trying to hit the upper volume key. Thanks for all who tried.
