How to convert MP3 to M4a, not logged into my iTunes just drag and dropping into my iPod

M iTunes shows only the M4a files through iTunes, when I plug in my iPod, but when I click directly on the iPod icon I am able to see the rest of my MP3 music, but it won't play on iPod and won't be seen on the iTunes user interface, only the m4a does show.

I have no way of converting them while inside the iPod.

Any tips?

Thanks

The way you're supposed to add content to Apple devices is to add the tracks to an iTunes library (or Music on new Macs) and then ideally sync the content from the library to the device. Manually drag/drop or copy/paste from library to device should also be possible but this is done from iTunes/Music, not directly in the file system. If you copy files over using the file system the library on the device won't know they are there and cannot play then. This is different from the way most other companies media players behave. iTunes should be able to play mp3 files that you add to its library (barring some with odd bitrates) and once in the library you should be able to copy to the iPod where they should also work, providing you do that via iTunes.
