OS for my late 2009 iMac - upgrade question

Currently running OS X El Capitan ver 10.11.6 … can someone help me figure out what I can or need to upgrade to?

Back up your data, check the application compatibility table, click here, and then on the download link for a more-recent OS. That model's maximum one is High Sierra.
