About Time Machine:
Time Machine is software (virtual) --there is nothing hardware(physical) about it. It is a backup service allowing you to create the backups, and then restore to them, when need be. Create a Time Machine Backup every-so-often. That way, you can have something to restore your Mac form, should anything go wrong in time to come. An excellent time to create one is where you make a major change to your Mac, such as a software install, or an upgrade install.
About Cloud Storage:
As for cloud storge, that is storage on an external server. Your entire Mac cannot be backup up to iCloud. See here: What does iCloud Back Up? - Apple Support
