Distance measurement during an OWS activity it wrong and gets more wrong
There are two parts to this issue. The first is that the distance measurements are just wrong. Here is an example of the first issue.
I only swim freestyle.
I have an applewatch Ultra.
I KNOW that the distance across the lagoon is 245 meters.
When I use my FORM goggles (which seems to use apple navigation kit and NOT healthkit) you can see that the distance measurement is pretty **** accurate. I do this swim every couple of days and the FORM goggles give a consistent answer here.
HOWEVER, when I don't use the goggles, and I just use the watch, and swimt eh same warm up, apple watch with the open water swim activity haves 188M... 30% different. Which goes to my calculated pace, and totally screws up any type of understanding of my current performance.
That is a huge error. Keep in mind.. I am using the brand new Apple Watch Ultra, that is supposed to have major location measurement improvements. It makes the Ultra and OWS activity measurement ultimately not even adequate, but totally useless for training.
The second issue is that it can't even give consistent location information during an activity. It teleports me large distances. Are these teleportations used in distance measurements? are they not included? They are wrong and they affect performance data.
I was really hoping that by now Apple would pay attention to their swimming and triathlon users... But this issue (which I have seen in AW3 and AW5) is not getting better, it seems to be getting worse.
here is the thing... the hardware apparently can give the right number. FORM goggles do a good job of giving correct measurement information. But their data looks exactly like you would expect from raw GPS data. Lets just say I don't do loop-de-doops when I swim.
