I read that there are issues after the last Ventura update. I also read that the hard drives that I have might have to be reformatted to use with Ventura . what would be the best new hard drive to buy for a backup for my new Mac Studio M1 running Ventura 13.2.1

just about any manufacturer's drives will work. just don't use any preloaded software on the drive (or install such software yourself) that supposedly makes the drive "Mac ready". when you use software from just about any manufacturer for their storage device you run the risk of that same software not being compatible with macOS updates / upgrades. it can cause the software to stop working. at best this will cause you a headache. at worst it can render your data inaccessible. it is always best to use disk utility to erase and format a drive before use to remove any preloaded software.

I am partial to drives from OWC. I recommend drives from OWC (MacSales.com) as they have proven reliability, excellent customer support and warranties. Consider one of these: OWC Mercury Elite Pro as they are inexpensive and reliable. It should be about 2 ½ to 3 times the size of the drive your've backing up.
