Dictation on Mac - "New Line" just types "new line"

When I dictate on Mac, 50% of the time, saying "new line" creates a new line (the correct behaviour), and 50% of the time it unhelpfully types "new line", contrary to the instructions.

I have read previous posts where others have the same issue. Some people claim it works if you pause between "new" and "line". Other people claim the opposite: just say "newline". I find that neither works.

Any advice on how to get it to do what the instructions say it is supposed to do? "New line" is supposed to create a new line. I have to look back every time to see what it did; I'd like it to just work correctly. Given that it keeps coming up in the comments, it seems like an issue that Apple should fix?
