8GB of RAM on a MAcbook AIr enough?
I am planning on getting a new MacBook today. I have been milking my MacBook Air 2014 for a while. My question is: Is 8GB of RAM enough for a low key multi-use laptop? The upgrade to 16GB is a few hundred dollars.

It's enough. The M series Macs use memory far more efficiently than the Intel series did, so a one-to-one comparison is of limited value.
Having said that it's always a good idea to purchase a Mac configured for how you expect to use it years from now, not just for today. There will be future needs impossible to anticipate, and getting more memory than you need right now will guarantee a long service life. Bear in mind you got nearly a decade of use out of your present Mac. How much is a few hundred dollars spread out over the course of a decade? Not much.

Thanks John, that is what I did. I stuck with the standard M1 chip and upgraded the RAM to 16G. I think that will give me a little leave way in the future. I think a wise $200 spent. For my needs, I think that will do. I appreciate your input.
My 2014 MacBook Air struggles with some applications at 4G of RAM. Certain 3rd party apps won’t update. I have had trouble updating the OS. Mine is running on High Sierra though I think this model tops out at El Capitan or Big Sur. Anyway the new one is purchased so we will see.
👍
My 2011 MacBook Air still works flawlessly. It was configured it to its limits at the time (4 GB).
