I want to back up my Mac with Time Machine. Does the external drive have to be connected all the time to my computer for this to work?

No. I connect mine once a week for a short while. But, of course, if something goes wrong you won't have the Time Machine external drive copy of any data that changed since it was last connected.

If I connect an Seagate Ultra Touch external drive to my computer does it have to be connected all the time to use it as a back up with Time Machine?
