I understand your MacBook is performing slower than you think it should.
Please determine if the same problems occur in "Safe Mode": How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support. Then, restart normally (not "Safe Mode") and compare its performance to how it was in "Safe Mode".
John -- appreciate your help. Before I try the method you suggest I want to establish whether it's my internet connection that's slow or the computer. Also I'm a bit wary that if I follow the steps you suggest and they don't work I'll be in a worse situation. I've used a computer (word processor) since 1982 by I'm still a novice.
The first thing you need to do is to properly identify the exact model of your Mac, because there are no 2014 MacBooks. MacBooks are 2015-2017 and 2006 to 2010 models.
Very strange Lanny. I bought it in April 2014 in Manchester UK and it came with a little booklet that said "Welcome to your new MacBook Pro." Perhaps it was the wrong booklet.
Note: There are no 2014 MacBooks, only 2006-2010 and 2015-2017. Otherwise, you may have either a MacBook Air or a MacBook Pro.
