Touch ID Not Completely Disabled

Thought I understood this from another of my posts, but apparently I don't.

I have Touch ID and Autofill Passwords OFF in as many places as I can find in Settings, but it's still popping up and allowing me to use Touch ID. E.g, I can open a password protected Keynote presentation using Touch ID.

happens on both iPad 7th gen and iPhone 6S.

Seems to be ok on iPhone 14 Pro (Keynote requires manual entry of password, Face ID doesn't work)

TIA for any guidance.

Greetings JohnrC123,

You mentioned that you've had this issue on multiple devices, and that you've checked in a few places in Settings to edit and disable the Touch ID feature on your device. To verify, have you tried to make sure that Touch ID is disabled overall on both devices? If you're unsure how, follow these steps:

    1. Go to Settings.
    2. Tap Touch ID & Passcode.
    3. Enter your passcode.
    4. Disable Touch ID.

You'll want to complete these steps on both devices. Does the issue remain. If so, make sure both the device are up-to-date and on the most current version of the software. The latest version available for the iPhone 6s and the iPad 7th generation is iOS 15.7.3. If you do not have the latest version of the software on each of those devices, follow the steps here to update: Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support. The update process can frequently address unexpected software behavior.

Best wishes!

“iPad 7th generation is iOS 15.7.3” - that’s wrong. iPad 7 supports iPadOS 16.3.1.

Just noticed that even though Settings > Touch ID is disabled *SOME* apps have their own Touch ID button which overrides the main Touch ID setting.

E.g. Settings > Notes > Password has a a button for it that remains ON regardless of the main Touch ID setting. I presume this is the same for Safari and the the reason I got a prompt for Touch ID to sign in to this forum. But I can't for life of me find a switch to turn it off.

The above are native Apple apps and I can't tell if any others ignore the Touch ID setting. But I don't understand why switching off the main "Touch ID" setting doesn't simply turn off Touch ID for the device.
