iPad closed all of my tabs overnight (again), software bug?

OS 16.3.1, 7th generation with over 4GB of memory available. For the second time this week my iPad has closed 40+ tabs that reflected many hours of research on a single subject. This has happened a number of times over the last month. There’s no “recently closed” window shown. As far as history, I may have hit several thousand pages yesterday, so it’s a major undertaking to try to restore the train of thought I had built over the last several days.

I’d also like to shut off the capability of the iPad to open a new window if I happen to hold my finger on something a fraction of time too long, I regard this as an annoyance, not a feature.

Let's enable and use iCloud tabs to prevent this from happening again:

"Set up and use iCloud Tabs

iCloud keeps the tabs you have open in Safari up to date on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Mac. That means you can go from one device to the next and pick up browsing wherever you left off.

Set up iCloud Tabs

Complete these steps on all of the devices where you want to share tabs.

On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Go to Settings, then tap your name.
Tap iCloud.
Under Apps Using iCloud, make sure that Safari is on. You might need to tap Show All to see Safari."

You may find this article to be helpful in understanding some of the frequent difficulties encountered by users with iPadOS Safari - along with some of Safari’s more esoteric features and quirks:

While not yet updated for iPadOS16, the majority of information remains pertinent to the latest version of iPadOS.

Insofar as possible, I hope to have distilled most of the frequent problems reported here - and documented procedures, strategies [and where needed] some useful workarounds.
