iTunes Folder/Music Folder??

Apologies in advance if this seems like a stupid question...

Does the "Music" app reference the iTunes library for albums and songs? I'm trying to create an iTunes library for a friend from their extensive collection of CDs and I'm not sure where they should go. About 300 CDs have been copied to an external hard drive.

There's a "Music" folder within iTunes (in the "Music" folder that's in the folder with my name on it that also has Pictures, Downloads, etc.) that has folders of my music, arranged by artist. This Music folder within iTunes is 62GB.

Then, in the "Music" folder (within the main "Music" folder that's in the folder with my name on it that also has Pictures, Downloads, etc.), there is a file called "Music Library.musiclibrary" and it's only about 142 MB.

So is the Music folder within iTunes the current library, or is it Music Library.musiclibrary, within the Music folder (both of them being within the main Music folder)??

Can I just drag all the folders of music from the CDs into the existing iTunes/Music library on my friend's computer? Or will I have to copy them all over again directly into the "Music" app?

I've attached a screen shot of what is in the main Music folder and circled in red, the folders discussed here.

Thanks for your help,

Mary E.

P.S. C'mon Apple--can't you use other names? How many Music folders does a person need to confuse themselves? Couldn't we just keep iTunes? It's worked for....whatever 20+ years.

See Managing your Mac media libraries - Apple Community for advice on rearranging your legacy iTunes folders. To make a new Music library on an external drive press and hold down option as you launch Music, click create library, then choose a location, e.g. <External> and save the library as Music or give the library a meaningful name. You can then add content as you wish into the Automatically Add to Music folder created inside <Library Name>/Media. Use the option-start-Music method to swap back to your original library when you're done. This assumes that the computer you want to use the library on is running the same version of macOS as you are, or better. Otherwise the library itself will need to be created on that computer as libraries are not backwards compatible.
