I recently bought a new iPad Pro and was advised my 1st generation pencil would work with it but I needed to buy a special connector. This arrived yesterday and when I connected the pencil to the iPad using the new connector, my iPad advised "This accessory is not supported by this device". Is there a fix or was I advised wrongly about the connectivity of the old pencil?

You were advised wrong. The First generation Apple Pencil is not compatible with an iPad Pro at all.
iPad Pro 12.9" 3rd gen and later and 11" , require a Second Generation Apple Pencil.
The Fist Generation Apple Pencil uses the adapter to work with the 10th Generation regular iPad.

Thanks. The annoying thing is that my advice came from an Apple person - during my telephone session "Your New iPad". (Despite that and my wasted £8, I have just ordered a 2nd gen pencil.)
Even Apple people can make mistakes. 🤷🏻♂️
