Ventura 13.2.1 MacMini M2 - External Drive access so slow.

On another Mac installation drive access is near instant - on this installation of Ventura it hangs for 20+ seconds even when the drive has been spun up recently for access.

I cannot imagine this is a "non bug" type situation. I tried disabling Spotlight completely but that has not improved anything.

Has anyone had any experience with such weirdness such as this? I had been using older iOS' for a while so this is all new to me.

Clicking around boxes and waiting patiently has grown to be too frustrating every time I need to do any simple task in practically every application that uses finder to navigate the filesystem...

I pray it is a simple cache change or setting that can provide a solution.

*Edit*

I did read over some other people's posts with a similar issue going back to 2022 and wanted to note that my drives are formatted HFS+, perhaps I should migrate the data over and reformat to APFS... I may still want to wait until anyone else could possibly chime in.

I wanted to come back and report - after laboriously copying over all the data to another drive THEN back after partitioning as APFS...

The issue is no longer there - so chalk this up to "Ventura hated the HFS+ external USB3 drive I had been using for media storage/access for a long time" changing it to APFS made it happy and I am no longer having to wait 20 seconds or so just to show the contents of the drive.

Not an elegant fix or a clear explanation as to why this would happen but I will take it over continued frustration and or data loss.
